Angus and Julia Stone took time out from their world tour in support of the critically acclaimed new album, “Down the Way”, to play a set at the Stronghold on Thursday. They killed. WeLoveVenice has spent quite a few nights at the Stronghold in 2010, and Thursday night ranks near the top.
The set started quietly with Julia’s voice cutting through the room over two sparse acoustic guitars, and peaked 45 minutes later with pounding drums and a wailing electric guitar. As the set evolved, Angus (the quiet one) took a few moments to play solo and Julia switched between piano, guitar and trumpet. Stronghold regular Tom Freund even joined the band on stage for a better-than-you’d-expect (but pretty standard) cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Storms.”
Brett Dennen took the stage for a solo performance before Angus & Julia kicked off. It was just him and an acoustic guitar, which seems to be his strongest format. It gives you a chance to focus on his songwriting skill, and he’s getting pretty good at talking to a crowd and getting them working.
Look out for video of Angus and Julia Stone and Brett Dennen’s performances at WeLoveVenice soon, including an exclusive interview with Ms. Stone.
