TARGET:   California State Water Resources Control Board

Approve the Basin Plan amendment adopted under the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board Resoultion No. R4-2009-007 – phasing out existing and prohibiting new septic systems in the Malibu Civic Center area.

Surfrider Beach is a crown jewel of surfing, an iconic beach, and the birthplace of the California beach lifestyle. Unfortunately, Surfrider is also one of the state’s most polluted beaches, receiving poor water quality grades in the Beach Report Card every year for nearly two decades.

Dear Chair Hoppin and California State Water Resources Control Board Members;

Over a million people visit Surfrider Beach annually, and beach-goers have spent decades recreating in polluted waters with major health consequences.

It has been scientifically demonstrated that commercial and residential septic tanks in the Malibu Civic Center area are a major source of pollutants into the Lower Malibu Creek, Malibu Lagoon, and ultimately Surfrider Beach.

A prohibition on new septics and phase-out of current septics in the Civic Center area is a critical step towards improving water quality at Malibu Lagoon and Surfrider Beach to protect human health and aquatic life.

We therefore urge the California State Water Resources Control Board to support the Basin Plan amendment adopted under RWQCB Resolution No. R4-2009-007 – which would phase out existing and prohibit new septic systems in the Malibu Civic Center area.

Thank you for your consideration.

So Cal Venetians, Let’s All Go Green!! Reasons NOT To Drink Bottled Water

Bottled water produces up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year. (Photo: quinn.anya/Flickr)

Many of us in the Venice community are bombarded with “green”.  And I don’t mean that of the smoking kind…which we are fortunate enough to have plenty as well.  I am talking about “going green”.  You know, becoming a more environmentally conscious So Cal Venetian.  While many think it’s time consuming or costly to transform your lifestyle or home into a greener one you’d be surprised at how changing a few little things you do every day could drastically effect our world for the long term.  Each week, this article will focus on one thing we all can put into practice to start living a more eco friendly life.  Come on…it’s sexy…it’s cool…everyone’s doing it!!  It’s one thing, every week to put into practice and here, you’ll find out why it’s important and how you are contributing to making a difference.  The grass may be a little greener on the other side.

LA named ‘coolest city on the planet’, Venice is top factor

Los Angeles is “the coolest city on the planet” according to GQ magazine. (GQ) Reason number one? Venice beach. According to the write up, Venice represents the “LA ideal” of palm trees, bohemians, movie stars, sunshine and beaches. Venice also appears at reason number 8, “great rooftop bars open twelve months a year.”  The hot spot mentioned? Hotel Erwin.

Other reasons Los kicks ass include a bunch of new downtown bars, Unami burger, Confederacy (a clothing boutique in Los Feliz) and Griffith Park.

Venice Art Crawl kicks off tonight!

As if you needed another reason to crawl through Venice, the “Venice Art Crawl” (VAC) kicks off this week. Why? Local artists are complaining about a lack of exhibition spaces in the area. In response, the VAC aims to turn anything (restaurants, clothing stores, etc) into a gallery (at least on the third Thursday of every month).

The Official Afterparty will be thrown by our friends over at VA

Check out a complete list of galleries here.

Venicestock 2010 drops on Sept 12 (maybe)

Buzz is building around Venicestock 2010. And the date is set for September 12th. But one important thing is missing: bands. Welo checked out the Venicestock Facebook page and traditional site, but couldn’t find anything. Last year, Venice favorites Saint John and the Revelations, Stevie Starlight and (this WeLo writer’s personal favorite) Ironheel played. So if this year’s lineup comes close, Venicestock 2010 should be a winner.

The festival will be held at Windward Plaza and benefit the St. Joseph Center (which helps the homeless).
